Gesucht ist eine Lösung der Gleichung x 4 + 6x 2 + 36 = 60x.
Auch die dritte Problemstellung ist klassisch und entstammt Cardanos Buch Ars magna. Allerdings bereitete es Cardano Schwierigkeiten, solche biquadratischen Gleichungen überhaupt zu behandeln, da sie ihm keine geometrische Interpretation boten. Dazu bemerkte er im Vorwort: „Da positio auf eine Linie, quadratum auf eine Fläche und cubum auf einen Körper hinweisen, wäre es sehr töricht, über dieses hinauszugehen. Die Natur erlaubt es nicht“.
