Abstract

Cholinesterases (ChE’s) and particularly acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were early (Loewi and Navratil 1926) associated with rapidly occurring events of neurohumoral or synaptic transmission and with function and motility (BACQ 1935 a). Thus, together with enzymes concerned with adrenergic function, ChE’s are dramatically different from enzymes concerned with relatively sluggish phenomena of growth or energetics, and their full significance can be suitably explored by neurophysiological and biophysical means applied to isolated or localized structures.
