Abstract
A controversial occupational health issue being faced today by scientists, administrators, managers, lawyers, employers, and employees is how to protect the unborn in the workplace. This issue is complex because it involves not only scientific judgment, but also legal and social considerations. A sense of urgency has arisen primarily because of an increase in the number of women entering the workplace and an increase in the number of agents being identified as potential teratogens or fetotoxins.
