Morphological Recognition of Lymphocytes and Macrophages

  • Chapter
Lymphocytes, Macrophages, and Cancer

Abstract

The identification of lymphocytes and monocytes and their subpopulations is important in the diagnosis and classification of leukaemias and lymphomas. Both cell types undergo morphological changes related to their function, which may lead to confusion particularly in histological sections. The frequent use of the non-specific term “mononuclear cell” indicates the difficulty in identification.
