Abstract
The Commission of the European Communities has recently estimated that 170 million pages of text are translated per year in Europe alone and that this figure will increase to 600 million pages by the year 2000. Despite much useful research and development in the field of machine translation, the fact remains that much of this work is still carried out by human translators, with or without such valuable aids as terminological databases.
