Abstract

In 1974, Wistar rats in the colony of Bio Breeding Laboratories in Worcester, Massachusetts, developed signs of insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM) (Logo-thetopoulos et al. 1984; Marliss et al. 1982). This syndrome is believed to be a cell-mediated autoimmune process that selectively destroys the insulin producing β-cells in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Throughout the years many ingenious hypotheses have been created in order to explain the destructive process, but the triggering event still remains elusive. In the many attempts to understand the etiopathogenesis of IDDM great help has come from different animal models like the streptozotocin-treated mice, the NOD (nonobese diabetic) mice, and the spontaneously diabetic BB rat.
