G-Proteins in the Signal Transduction of the Neutrophil

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 108 / 2))

Abstract

Heterotrimeric G protein-mediated transmembrane signaling has been extensively studied in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), due in part to the ability to obtain large numbers of these cells from peripheral blood and their importance to health. Studies using PMNs and the human cell line HL-60 have produced significant advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms of PMN responses to infection and inflammation. Additionally, these cells provide a useful model for studying the coupling of multiple receptors to multiple effectors by G-proteins.
