Neoglycoconjugates: Fundamentals and recent progresses

  • Conference paper
Lectins and Cancer

Abstract

Studies of lectins have been greatly benefitted by the use of synthetic carbohydrate conjugates. Proteins modifies with carbohydrate derivatives can be used for precipitin reactions or binding studies. Solid matrices containing carbohydrates of definitive structure can be used for isolation of lectins or cell adhesion studies. We have coined a term “neoglycoproteins” to describe the proteins artificially modified with carbohydrates of known structure. The usage of prefix “neo” was later extended to lipids modified with carbohydrates (“neoglyco-lipids”), and currently “neoglycoconjugates” is used to describe artificially constructed carbohydrate conjugates, including derivatives of proteins, lipids, and many other types of compounds, such as solid matrices (“glyco-matrices”).
