Abstract
What is the role of cell surface glycans ? Thorough analysis of glycoprotein and glycolipid structure has revealed a tremendous heterogeneity. As a rule, glycans of a given glycoprotein are heterogeneous even at a given glycosylation site (reviewed in Rademacher et al., 1988). Therefore, although glycan heterogeneity potentially encodes a large amount of information, not all structural variations are of unique biological significance.
