Abstract

Most of the work on culture of atrial and ventricular cardiocytes which was started 75 years ago [1–3] has been done with cells from the hearts of neonates. A study of in vitro growth of an adult animal appeared only in 1974 [4]. In several attempts, isolated cardiomyocytes from adult animals either failed to establish in culture [5–8] or produced cells lacking convincing myotypic properties [9]. Most of the published work up to now has been centered on ventricular cardiocytes, for obvious reasons. In the present review, I shall give a brief description of the techniques used to culture adult atrial cardiocytes and of the ultrastructure, DNA synthetic activity and atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) production of adult atrial cardiocytes in culture.

This research was supported by a group grant from the Medical Research Council of Canada to the Multidisciplinary Research Group on Hypertension, by Pfizer (England), Bio-Méga Inc. (Montréal), the National Research Council of Canada and the Ministère de la Science et de la Technologie du Québec.
