Abstract

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry is among the most convenient and useful methods for the quantitative and qualitative analyses of lignin in solution. Because of its aromatic nature, lignin strongly absorbs ultraviolet light and exhibits characteristic maxima in the ultraviolet light region. The location and intensity of the maxima depend on the type of lignin, its chemical modifications, and on the solvent used in the photometric measurements. References relating to the variety of interpretations of ultraviolet light absorption spectra of lignin and its derivatives are published extensively in reviews (Brauns 1952, Brauns and Brauns 1960, Goldschmid 1971, Fengel and Wegener 1984).
