Abstract
The HLA system, the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in man, consists of a set of linked genes on chromosome 6, which code for different classes of highly polymorphic cell membrane molecules. The biological function of the HLA-A, -B, -C or class I antigens, which are expressed on almost all nucleated cells, mainly concerns immune recognition. Cytotoxic T-Iymphocytes can recognize virus-infected cells only in the context of HLA class I molecules, a phenomenon called MHC restriction (Zinkernagel and Doherty 1974). However, MHC class I antigens may also be involved in nonimmunological recognition processes (Dausset and Contu 1980).
