Zusammenfassung
Wenn man in der Psychologie von modalitätsspezifischen Systemen spricht, denkt man meist an die Kontroverse über die duale Kodierung (Paivio, 1971) oder die analoge versus propositionale visuelle Repräsentation (z.B. Pylyshyn, 1981; Kosslyn, 1981; u.a.). Dies ist eine Kontroverse, die Von beiden Seiten sehr engagiert geführt wurde und noch geführt wird. Während es vorübergehend so schien, als ob die Diskussion zu gunsten der propositionalen Modelle entschieden wäre, haben analoge Ansätze in jüngerer Zeit durch das Konstrukt der ‘mentalen Modelle’ (z.B. Johnson-Laird, 1983) neuen Auftrieb erhalten. Dies dürfte zu einem Wiederaufleben der Diskussion führen. Diese Diskussion, ihre Irrwege, aber auch dabei erzielte Erkenntnisfortschritte wollen wir ein Stück weit aufzeigen.
