Zusammenfassung

Nur wenige der vielen Arzneimittel, mit denen man vor 1922 versuchte, den Diabetes mellitus zu behandeln, besaßen signifikante hypoglykämische Eigenschaften, und die meisten hatten unerwünschte toxische Wirkungen. Die Entdeckung des Insulins und seiner klinischen Wirksamkeit schien jedoch das Problem des Diabetes zu lösen, und man bemühte sich danach viele Jahre lang nur wenig, nach einer Alternative für eine orale Therapie zu suchen.
