Abstract

In recent years it has become increasingly evident that the cell surface membrane plays a crucial role in almost all cellular activities and is, thus, of great importance in defense against neoplastic disease. Changes in the structure of the cell membrane are of particular interest because alterations in the properties of the cell surface are believed to contribute to the disordered proliferations that characterize malignant cells. Human histocompatibility (HL-A) antigens have proved to be a particularly useful tool in studying these changes on the cell membrane, since these genetically segregating antigenic components are present on the surface of all nucleated cells. These individuality markers can readily be defined since grafts exchanged between individuals who differ with respect to these antigens are promptly rejected by the immune system of the recipient. Furthermore, the association of some HL-A antigens with susceptibility to neoplastic disease has given an additional impetus to the characterization of these cell surface markers at the cellular and molecular levels in order to acquire a better understanding of the allograft rejection phenomenon and to gain further insight into the pathogenesis of the neoplastic process.
