Abstract

Tasmania is an island and is the smallest state in Australia, with a population of approximately 500,000, corresponding to a population density of 7.36 persons/km2. The state has a two-tiered political system, with both a state and a local government level. The Government of Tasmania exists within the federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy of Australia. The domestic administrator, called Governor, is appointed by the Queen on advice of the state Premier. The Head of Government or Premier is appointed by the Governor.
