Definition

A gloss meter is an instrument that is used to measure specular reflection gloss of a surface. Gloss is determined by projecting a beam of light of intensity at a fixed angle onto a surface and measuring the amount of reflected light at an equal but opposite angle.

Introduction

The gloss meter measures gloss intensity under a fixed set of illumination and viewing conditions [1,2,3]. Figure 1 illustrates the configuration of the collimated light illumination source and the filtered detector across a limited range of observation reception angles. The measurement results of a gloss meter are related to the amount of reflected light from a black glass standard with a defined refractive index. The ratio between the reflected and incident light for the specimen across a range of angles is compared with the ratio for the gloss standard, is recorded as gloss units (GU).
