Abstract
The need and rationale for reconfigurable manufacturing systems are driven by the changing manufacturing environment characterized by aggressive competition on a global scale, and a pressure to increase productivity. Because of this global competition manufacturers are facing market conditions characterized by (i) short windows of opportunity for introduction of new products whose lifetime will be shorter, and (ii) large fluctuations in product demand. The consequent requirement from the manufacturing system is that the system should be designed for a rapid change in terms of its functionality (new products) and throughput capacity (changing demand) (Koren et al. 1999).
