Abstract

The intention of democratic citizenship education in schools is to educate young people in the knowledge, skills and values required to become active citizens in a modern democracy. In this chapter democratic citizenship education relates to school-based activities and thus benchmarking relates to the performance of school students in those activities which are usually located under the name of civic education.

This chapter is based on a research project funded by the Australian Research Council.
