Zusammenfassung

Die Verbändelandschaft in Polen prägen zwei gesellschaftliche Organisationen in besonderer Weise: die katholische Kirche und die Gewerkschaften. Die Kirche entwickelte sich während der polnischen Teilungen ab Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts zu der gesellschaftlich integrativen Kraft, unter deren Dach weitere zivilgesellschaftliche Gruppen entstanden, und behielt diese Rolle auch im 20. Jahrhundert nach dem Einmarsch Nazi-Deutschlands und später der Oktroyierung des Sozialismus. Die freie Gewerkschaftsbewegung formierte sich ab Mitte der 1970er Jahre und war lange Zeit viel mehr als nur eine Vertretung von Arbeitnehmern. Bei der Gründung der Unabhängigen Selbstverwalteten Gewerkschaft Solidarität (Niezależny Samorządny Związek Zawodowy – NSZZ Solidarność) im August 1980 ging es zunächst darum, eine alternative Form der Interessenartikulation der Arbeiter auf der Danziger Schiffswert zu ermöglichen und deren Legalisierung zu erringen. Im Zuge dieses Kampfes wurde die Solidarność zu einer breiten Protestbewegung gegen den real existierenden Sozialismus in Polen. Dabei arbeiteten Kirche und Solidarność oft eng zusammen, etwa bei den sogenannten „fliegenden Universitäten“ des Untergrunds (Staniszkis 1985, 1991).
