Zusammenfassung
Betrachtet man die als klassisch angesehenen Medienstudien der Cultural Studies aus den 1970er Jahren, so sind diese typischerweise auf traditionelle Massenmedien fokussiert. Die Beziehung von Technologie und Kultur ist entsprechend nur sehr selten ein Thema. Eine der wenigen, aber wichtigen Ausnahmen davon ist Raymond Williams’ Untersuchung »Television: Technology and cultural form« (Williams 1990). Wie der Titel bereits anklingen lässt, geht es Williams darum, das Medium Fernsehen gleichzeitig als Technologie und Kultur zu begreifen. Ein solcher Zugang versucht, sowohl einen Technikdeterminismus als auch einen Techniksymptomismus zu vermeiden.
