Die Förderung des Verlegers Giulio Ricordi zugunsten Puccinis bestand auch nach dem ausbleibenden Erfolg von Edgar, sie blieb vorausschauend und langfristig. Kurz nach dessen Premiere plante man zusammen die nächsten Opern – so eine Ankündigung in der Gazzetta musicale vom 28. April 1889.
