August 1931 nimmt Benn ironisch Stellung zu sich als kritischem (»ich bin kein Kritiker«, SW III, 327) und literarischem Leser (»ich lese überhaupt nicht viele literarische Bücher«, ebd.) sowie generell zur literarischen Produktion der Zeit.
