Zussamenfassung

Es gibt wohl nur wenige literarische Texte, über die so viel und anhaltend geforscht wurde und wird wie über Heart of Darkness. Von den Zeitgenossen begrüßt als »intensely modern«, »the high-water mark of English fiction« und »psychological masterpiece« vom Range eines Dostojewski und Flaubert, zählt Joseph Conrads um die Jahreswende 1898/99 entstandener Roman seither zu den »half-dozen greatest short novels in the English language«, gilt als »perhaps the most commonly prescribed novel in twentieth-century literature courses in English Departments of American universities« und »probably the most widely reprinted short novel in English«.

And it was Africa, the continent out of which the Romans used to say some new thing was always coming, that got cleared of the dull imaginary wonders of the dark ages, which were replaced by exciting spaces of white paper.
