Zusammenfassung

Der Nationalismus ist eine einflußreiche Komponente im politischen Spektrum der ehemals sozialistischen Länder Europas. Teils knüpft er bewußt an vorsozialistische Traditionen an, teils radikalisiert er den Protest gegen eine Fremdherrschaft, der das Unglück des jeweiligen Landes zugeschrieben wird — gegen serbische Dominanz in den ausbrechenden Bundesstaaten Jugoslawiens, gegen die Sowjetunion in den ehemaligen Comecon-Staaten, gegen Rußland in der Sowjetunion selbst, schließlich sogar gegen die tschechische Übermacht in der Tschechoslowakei. An seinen Rändern griff der Nationalismus verbreitete Ressentiments und Aversionen auf, vor allem, wenn sie sich in Machterwerb ummünzen ließen — Aversionen teils gegen alte Feinde, teils gegen Juden, Zigeuner und Nachbarn. In einigen Ländern ist dieser Nationalismus mit erwartbaren Konsequenzen an die Macht gelangt. In anderen ist er minoritär aber doch sichtbar präsent (Hockenos 1993, Ignatieff 1994).
