Zusammenfassung

Ein großer Teil der Polysaccharide wie Cellulose, Hemicellulosen, Stärke etc. wird vorzugsweise im Pflanzenreich gefunden und wird dort durch Photosynthese mit Hilfe des Chlorophylls aus CO2 und Wasser synthetisiert. Pflanzliches Leben ist daher die Grundvoraussetzung für die Existenz tierischer Lebewesen. Das Vorkommen der Polysaccharide ist allerdings nicht auf die Pflanzen beschränkt. So wird Cellulose in den Tunicaten (Manteltieren) als Tunicin gefunden und das Cellulosederivat Chitin ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des Außenskeletts der Arthropoden (Gliedertiere). Cellulose ihrerseits ist als Strukturpolysaccharid in sehr großer Menge in den Zellwänden der Pflanzen enthalten.
