Zusammenfassung
Nach Meinung des Mathematikers David Hilbert (1862–1943) ist die Mathematik die Wissenschaft der formalen Systeme. Will man dieser Definition folgen, so muß man die Mathematik den Geisteswissenschaften zuordnen, obwohl ihre Anfänge im Altertum aufgrund naturwissenschaftlicher Probleme wie der Auswertung astronomischer Messungen oder terrestrischen Vermessung (Pyramiden) entstanden sind.
