Zusammenfassung
In der Managementliteratur der 80er Jahre wird die japanische Unternehmungskultur häufig als anderen, zum Beispiel westlichen Unternehmungskulturen überlegen und als Grundlage der Wirtschaftsstärke japanischer Unternehmungen im Weltmarkt (Ouchi 1981; Pascale/Athos, 1981) dargestellt. Die auf „superior Asian values“ (Deal/Kennedy, 1982, S. 5) basierende, von hoher Loyalität der Arbeitnehmer geprägte, starke und kohärente Organisationskultur wird auch heute noch von vielen Autoren als spezifischer, dominierender Erfolgsfaktor japanischer Unternehmungen gesehen (vgl. Dore, 2000, S. 134; Waragai, 2002, S. 6). Seit Beginn der japanischen Rezession Mitte der 90er Jahre wird diese These jedoch zunehmend in Frage gestellt: Die japanische Unternehmungskultur wird als Teil des Problems, sogar als schwerfälliges Hindernis im notwendigen Prozess des Aufbaus neuer Wettbewerbsfähigkeit zur Überwindung der Wirtschaftskrise diskutiert (Schiende, 1994; Lynn, 2002, S. 515 ff.; Selmer, 2001, S. 243 ff.; Waragai, 2002, S. 3). Die „einstige Stärke“ der japanischen Unternehmung, so Okumura (1998, S. 41), „hat sich in ihr Gegenteil verkehrt und schlaglichtartig ihre Widersprüche offengelegt“.
