Die Annäherung einer gegebenen Funktion f(x) in einem Intervall durch eine andere, meist einfach zu berechnende a (x) nennt man Approximation. Benutzt man dazu nur endlich viele Funktionswerte von f, so nennt man die Approximation diskret. Ein Beispiel diskreter Approximation ist die Interpolation.
