Zusammenfassung

Die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung zu politischer Gewalt hat erst in den späten 1980 er Jahren begonnen, sich systematisch mit kollektiver Gewalt gegen Leib, Leben und Eigentum ethnischer Gruppen zu befassen, wie umgekehrt die Forschung zu ethnischen Konflikten die Gewaltdynamik lange Zeit wenig berücksichtigt hat (Brubaker/Laitin 1998 : 423). Jenkins und Schock beklagten noch 1992, dass ein „huge empirical gap currently limits our understanding of ethnic antagonisms“ (181). Die Gründe für diese Vernachlässigung lagen in der soziologischen Modernisierungstheorie, die askriptive Merkmale zunehmend an Bedeutung verlieren sah, in der Wahl Neuer sozialer Bewegungen als Paradigma kollektiven Verhaltens, in Problemen der Soziologie mit physischer Gewalt und Emotionalität sowie die Behandlung ethnischer Konflikte als Epiphänomene ökonomischer Interessen und Widersprüche (Hanf 1989 : 314).
