Synaptic Transmission of Pain in the Dorsal Horn

Abstract

Nociceptive transmission ascends from the periphery to the brain along specialized neuronal pathways. The spinal dorsal horn is a major site of nociceptive signal processing, which involves multiple types of neurons and complex circuits involving both excitatory and inhibitory synapses. These dorsal horn circuits are critical for normal acute pain processing and may play a role in the development of chronic pain.
