Abstract

Fall risk assessment can help identify fall-prone individuals and design fall prevention and intervention programs, therefore it is recognized as an effective fall prevention measure. The foot center of pressure (COP) is an important fall risk assessment parameter. This paper presents a novel approach for measuring the COP trajectory by a wearable device based on low cost force sensitive resistors (FSRs). A pilot study was carried out for model development and validation purpose. The results showed that COP trajectory can be estimated accurately. This study can benefit the future clinical application to allow the COP be analyzed in home settings and used as the fall risk assessment parameter for elderly who are prone to fall accidents.
