Treatment Approaches for Regulatory Disorders

Abstract

A variety of counseling and therapy approaches have been developed in recent decades to support parents experiencing problems with their infant or toddler. Interventions in parent–infant psychotherapy are aimed at supporting the infant, the parents, and their relationship. Empirical research shows that the best results are achieved when the focus of the intervention is on improving the parent–infant relationship. Intervention strategies can be distinguished in terms of stepwise treatment concepts (guidance, counseling, psychotherapy) or treatment modalities (behavioral, psychodynamic, integrative approaches). The present chapter provides an overview of the most frequently used methods.
