Abstract
The discovery of superoxide dismutase, an enzyme to eliminate oxygen-derived free radicals, raised many questions. Why and how was this radical produced in biological systems? How was it toxic? Were there positive contributions associated with superoxide production? Was it involved in a delicate redox balance? Decades later these questions are still being clarified.
