Abstract

Hyperthermia is a rise in core body temperature above the physiological norm. Used for centuries as a remedy for a range of afflictions, heat therapy is now recognised as an effective adjunct in the treatment of many cancers. Hyperthermia may be induced locally in tissues to target a specific disease focus or regionally in an extremity or body cavity. Its usefulness stems from its ability to damage malignant cells whilst relatively sparing normal tissues and from its synergism with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This chapter describes the rationale and uses for local and regional hyperthermia in the treatment of malignant disease.
