Abstract

Therapeutic interventions take place within a system that requires policies, procedures, and practices that keep patient safety at the forefront. This is particularly important in the critical care setting and no different when the intervention is enteral nutrition (EN) or parenteral nutrition (PN) therapy. Each institution requires an oversight structure to assure consistency of policies, procedures, and practices across all departments and at each step in the nutrition support process. Safety issues arise at each step in the process with risk reduction strategies including the involvement of nutrition support specialists, improved communication, and standardization codified in policies and procedures for each step based on available guidelines and best practice recommendations.
