Historical Aspects of Fungal Infections

Fungal Infections of the Central Nervous System

Abstract

Searching the historical perspective of fungal origins, Hippocrates appears to be the first physician to describe the cases of candidiasis in his book Epidemics. Afterward, however, fungal infections concerning the central nervous system (CNS) seem to receive little attention in scientific community. CNS infections usually have a variety of presentations and manifestations, depending on the particular characteristics and immune status of patient. In this chapter, a brief historical presentation of findings regarding fungal infections of the CNS from “Ancient Greece” to “Mid Modern Period” and “Contemporary Period” is presented, documented, and discussed briefly.
