Abstract
Many breakthroughs in medicine, surgery, and basic and translational research enabled the development of vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) from a scientific dream into a critically important reconstructive modality and clinical realty for patients not amenable to conventional treatment options. This chapter reviews the history of these developments and how they have facilitated and contributed to the advent of a new era in transplantation.
