Abstract
In the last 25 years techniques of potato production throughout the world have changed radically. Although developments in western Europe have not been as rapid as in the U.S.A., mechanization has nevertheless reached a more advanced level there than in some other parts of the world, and the changes which have taken place in Great Britain may therefore be taken as an example. In 1948, 65–70% of the area carrying maincrop varieties was planted by hand (Boyd and Dyke, 1950); in 1973, the last year for which adequate survey data are available, the figure had fallen to 3% (Potato Marketing Board, 1975). Complete potato harvesters were not mentioned in the report of the 1948 survey but in 1958, 3% of the crop was lifted with machines of this type (Potato Marketing Board, 1959). This figure rose to 18% in 1963, 30% in 1968 and to 57% in 1973 (Potato Marketing Board 1965, 1970, 1975).
