Mineral nutrition

  • Chapter
The Potato Crop

Abstract

In this chapter an attempt will be made to illustrate the changes with time in the accumulation of mineral elements and their concentration in the dry matter in various parts of potato plants grown with what was presumed to be an adequate nutrient supply. This will be followed by a discussion of the way in which nutrients may affect growth and yield. Particular attention has been paid to the effects of nutrients on leaf area and to the way in which nutrients affect early tuber growth, the rate of tuber growth over the main period of tuber bulking and the cessation of tuber growth associated with leaf senescence. The nature of the relationship between tuber yield and plant nutrients will be discussed together with factors which may affect this relationship. The estimation of nutrient requirement will be briefly considered.
