The Potato Crop

Abstract

Following the introduction of the potato as a food crop to Great Britain it was grown largely as a vegetable for local consumption rather than as a saleable cash crop as it is today. Non-agricultural communities were small at this time and had ready access to holdings from which potatoes could be obtained. The need to grow potatoes on a more extensive basis emerged as cheap food sources were required for the large urban populations that appeared in the nineteenth century.
