Abstract

Since 1974 three editions of Present Day Practice in Infant Feeding have been published by the Department of Health (Oppe et al., 1974, 1980a, 1988). These have been followed by welcome changes and improvements in infant feeding, but there are at least three areas of uncertainty where policy is unclear, our advice inconsistent, and practice variable.
