Abstract

The fundamental purpose of nephrourology is the preservation and improvement of renal function. The contribution that renal radionuclide studies makes to this goal is increasing in parallel with the developments in renal radiological techniques. This is through the application of renal ‘stress’ tests: frusemide-induced diuresis and captopril-enhanced determination of renovascular disorder; and because the sets of renal images are increasingly used as windows to analysis programs. These give objective measurements of two important renal functions: uptake function, the ability of each kidney to take up compounds from the blood leading to measurements of total and relative renal functions; and transit function, the time dependency of nephron transport which is utilized in the assessment of obstructive nephropathy and renovascular disorder.
