Abstract

This chapter describes the use of beta- or electron-emitting radiopharmaceuticals for treating several painful musculoskeletal conditions. These radiopharmaceuticals emit negatively charged particles (beta particles or electrons) with a maximum range of approximately 1–11 mm (Tables 1.1 and 1.2), which can cause sub-lethal or lethal damage to cells by interacting with their DNA [1]. Radionuclide therapy, by eliminating the targeted cells responsible for tissue damage and the resultant pain, provides marked clinical benefit to the patient.
