Olfactory Receptors in Acipenseridae Fish Larvae

Abstract

Basic aspects of the development of the olfactory system of Acipenseridae occurs during the period between the embryo’s hatching and its period of independent feeding. It was found that actively feeding Acipenseridae larvae have the same types of olfactory receptor cells as observed in adults (Pyatkina, 1976). However, structural peculiarities of developing olfactory receptor cells have not been studied during the postnatal period. Therefore, we carried out an electron microscopic and cytochemical study of the developing olfactory receptor cells of the Acipenseridae. The ratio of ciliated biopolar receptor cells to microvillar cells was calculated at different stages of larval development.
