Abstract

The primary focus of the present chapter is on the neurochemical effects of alcohol (ethanol*) on the central nervous system (CNS). Perspectives are provided on the neurochemical basis of ethanol’s action on the brain. In addition, the roles of energy metabolism, alcohol metabolism, and macromolecular metabolism on the acute and chronic effects of ethanol are discussed. The chapter also discusses how alcohol exposure can modify the fetal and neonatal brain.
