Abstract

The use of general anesthetic agents started with diethyl ether approximately a century ago. Anesthesiology, as a separate medical discipline, evolved far more recently and gained recognition only after World War II. It blossomed in the next three decades and is now established as an important medical specialty. Knowledge of the effects of anesthetic agents on all physiological mechanisms is crucial to the safe administration of these agents during surgical anesthesia. With the advance of neurochemical research in the last quarter of a century, much knowledge of the effects of anesthetic agents on the nervous system has been gained. Many review articles touch this subject in various ways.1−27
