Abstract
Two forces are converging on nursing today, and both carry tremendous implications for the profession. The first is the demand for accountability, both of quality and of cost. The reimbursement revolution and the malpractice crisis together create a need for increased data collection for ongoing and retrospective monitoring of standards of care and of cost. The second is the force of technology in the fields of biomedicine and information. These technologies are changing the way nursing is practiced, posing new challenges and offering new opportunities.
