Ion Deregulation in Injured Proximal Tubule Epithelial Cells

  • Chapter
Nephrotoxicity

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the importance of calcium in the initiation and continuation of cell injury in kidney proximal tubule epithelium (PTE). We have known, for some time, the association between calcium and cell injury and, in fact, at this meeting, there have been several papers involving chloroform, gasoline, and cisplatinum, that relate cell calcium concentration to cell injury. However, this has long been known by pathologists and other investigators who have related the presence of calcium precipitates in tissues to the presence of necrosis. At the same time, calcium has a beneficial effect in the extracellular environment at all levels of organization, from the organism to the cell; consider, for example, in the Chalk streams of England and, indeed, in the streams of any country where calcium in the water is extremely beneficial and leads to a much more rapid growth of both plants and animals, vertebrates and invertebrates.
