Abstract

Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein was first described as a urinary inhibitor of viral haemagglutination (Tamm and Horsfall, 1950). It is a 75,000 dalton molecular weight glycoprotein, which is synthesised in the kidney and excreted in urine. Normal individuals excrete approximately 100 mg per day of this material, which has the ability to form massive aggregates of up to 1.4 × 107 daltons. Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein contains between 25 and 40% carbohydrate by weight and has a tertiary structure resembling a spiralled string of beads (Wenk et al, 1981). It has a number of unusual chemical and physical properties: such as a ready ability to transform between sol and gel states in solution, according to pH, the ionic environment, its osmotic concentration in solution, and/or the concentration of other solutes (Hoyer and Seiler, 1979).
